Your Website's Social Preview Image Isn't a Screenshot. Here's What Cantrip Draws Instead.

Paste a link to your Cantrip site into a Slack channel or a Facebook post and something happens automatically: a title, a line of description, and a picture show up before anyone clicks. Most people assume that picture is a screenshot of whatever page they linked to. On Cantrip it isn't, and it's worth knowing what it actually is before you find out the hard way.

That preview image comes from a field in your Branding settings called the Social Media Card. If you never touch it, Cantrip builds one for you automatically: your logo, centered on a white card, sitting on top of your site's primary brand color. No logo uploaded yet? It falls back to your site's name in plain text on that same colored background. Either way, it's a small rendered graphic built specifically for sharing, not a photo of your homepage.

Here's the part worth knowing: that's the only preview image your pages get. Share your homepage, your contact page, your pricing page, whatever, and every one of them hands back the exact same picture. Cantrip doesn't have a field yet for setting a different preview image per page. Blog posts are the one exception: a post uses its own featured image instead, so your blog shares look distinct from each other even though your regular pages don't.

The card also isn't static once it exists. Upload a new logo, change your icon, switch your theme, tweak your brand color, or just save your website's general settings, and Cantrip quietly redraws it in the background, so it stays in sync with whatever your site looks like today. The moment you upload your own custom image instead (Branding tab, or the MCP's upload tool if you're scripting it), Cantrip leaves it alone. Your file wins, permanently, until you delete it.

Now the honest gap. That auto-generated card only gets built the first time one of those triggers fires, logo upload, icon upload, an appearance change, or a settings save. A brand-new site, fresh off a starter kit, hasn't hit any of those yet. Until it does, the image address Cantrip hands to Facebook or Slack points at a file that doesn't exist on the server. Share your site before you've touched Branding even once and you can get a broken image icon instead of a card.

The fix is one click, and most people stumble into it without meaning to: upload a logo. That alone triggers the first real card and the broken link goes away for good. If you're not planning to add a logo right away, just open Branding and hit save on anything, even a color tweak does it. Either way, do it before the first time you share the site somewhere, not after.

One shared image across every page is a fair trade for what Cantrip is built for. Nobody's sharing their refund policy page on Facebook and expecting a custom photo. If you want more control than that, upload your own 1200 by 630 image once and you're done: same card, everywhere, exactly the one you picked instead of the one Cantrip guessed.
